Education & Family Life:

Daycare centers

Education will be one of your main priorities if you move to Geneva with children. School is compulsory in Switzerland, from kindergarten to 4 years old.

Often, moving to a new city means leaving a familiar school system and an established circle of friends. The challenge is to find a new school that matches your child’s abilities and your expectations.

It is reassuring to know that the standard of public education in Switzerland is very high and that the children generally adapt well to their new school, despite the differences in language and culture.

For children of preschool age, childcare services are provided in kindergartens – or crèches. These are usually coordinated by your local commune, see for example information from the town of Meyrin or Grand Saconnex.

The Association of Geneva Municipalities allows you to find the website of your municipality.

Nurseries welcome children whose parents work. These establishments practice continuous working hours with midday meals taken on site, from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Private daycare, nanny and au pair support are other childcare options, as well as forest or farm kindergartens that are growing in popularity.

The Early Childhood Information Office (BIPE) informs parents about the different types of childcare services available in the city of Geneva and handles registration.

Family crèches or nurseries offer an alternative form of childcare to collective crèches. They provide childcare from the end of maternity leave until school age, with care taking place at the home of a childminder while offering moments in the community.
