Practical Geneva

Child care centers

Education will be one of your top priorities if you’re relocating to Geneva with children.

Often, moving to a new city involves leaving a familiar school system and a well-established circle of friends. The challenge is to find a new school that matches your child’s abilities and your expectations.

It’s reassuring to know that the standard of public education in Switzerland is very high and children usually adapt well to their new school, despite initial differences in language and culture.

School is compulsory in Switzerland, starting with kindergarten at the age of 4.

Nursery schools

For pre-schoolers, early childhood care is provided at nursery schools - or crèches. These are usually co-ordinated by your local commune, see for example the information from city of Meyrin or Grand Saconnex.

The "crèches" welcome children whose parents are working. They practice continuous working hours with midday meals on the premises, form 7 am to 6.30 pm, Monday to Friday.

Private day care, nanny and au pair support are other childcare options, as well as Forest Kindergartens, that are growing in popularity.

Childcare structures

The ‘Bureau d’information petite enfance’ (BIPE) informs parents about the different types of childcare available in the city of Geneva and takes care of registrations.

Family nurseries (family daycare) provide an alternative form of childcare compared to collective nurseries. They provide childcare from the end of the mother’s maternity leave until school age in the home of a family nursery assistant while ensuring communal time.
