Human rights research and communications internship

The Universal Rights Group (URG) is looking for dynamic individuals with a passion for universal human rights, international politics, and policy research, analysis, to fill regular three-month internship position at its main office in Geneva. Applicants must have completed a relevant degree (e.g. Master of international relations, Master of human rights) within the last two years, or have the possibility of undertaking an internship as part of their degree.

The URG is a policy think tank focused on the international human rights system and its impact on the ground. The URG has its main office in Geneva, Switzerland, and also has a permanent office in New York and in Bogota. The URG is the only think tank in the world focused uniquely on international human rights policy. For more information, see universal-rights.org.

The URG Internship aims to give the successful applicant a comprehensive grounding in the work of the UN Human Rights Council, its mechanisms, the Treaty Bodies, the wider UN human rights ‘pillar,’ the regional human rights systems, and the ways in which universal norms are translated into domestic improvements in the enjoyment of human rights.

The internship offers a unique opportunity to work at the cutting edge of international human rights knowledge, research, and counsel.

Responsibilities

The Intern will support the work of URG Analysts to implement the projects set down by the URG Board of Trustees in the organisation’s two-year Global Strategic Plan.  Those projects cover a range of institutional and thematic issues, including inter alia: the review and reform of the Human Rights Council; combatting violent extremism; the link between human rights and corruption; the emergence and evolution of single national implementation and reporting systems.

Daily responsibilities may vary depending on the project, but would usually include some or all of the following:

  • Desk research, either online or at the UN Library and archives;
  • Event organisation – e.g. retreats, conferences, Human Rights Council side events;
  • Assistance with communications and marketing;
  • Help with the maintenance of URG’s website, including uploading new content;
  • Writing articles and blogs about UN human rights developments.
  • Attending relevant UN meetings, preparing reports, updating and discussing outcomes with URG Analysts.

Qualifications and competences

URG Internships aim to provide recent graduates from degree level university courses (ideally at Masters level) with a first professional experience in the world of international human rights policy.

Applicants should have strong research and drafting skills; a keen interest in and knowledge of universal human rights, including UN human rights institutions, mechanisms and policy; and good organisational abilities (e.g. for event management).

Duration

The internship is for a three month period, renewable once if both parties are in agreement.

Conditions

The Intern will receive a monthly stipend of 1,000 CHF per month for three months (with the possibility of renewing the internship once).
